CELPIP FAQ: the most common questions, answered

This page answers the questions people ask most about CELPIP, briefly, with a link to the full guide for each one. CELPIP is the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program, a computer-based English test used mainly for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship.

#What is CELPIP, and who is it for?

CELPIP is a Canadian English test taken on a computer, used mainly to prove your English for a Canadian immigration or citizenship application. It measures Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, and IRCC reads the result as a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level.

There are two versions. CELPIP-General tests all four skills and is the one for permanent residence and most professional and study purposes. CELPIP-General LS tests Listening and Speaking only and is the version accepted for Canadian citizenship. #What is on the CELPIP test, and how long is it?

CELPIP-General has four sections, taken in one sitting on a computer in under three hours, always in the order Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking. Between them they hold 38 Listening questions, 38 Reading questions, 2 Writing tasks, and 8 Speaking tasks.

There is no separate speaking appointment: Speaking is the last section of the same sitting, recorded through a headset with no interviewer in the room. The CELPIP exam format guide walks through every section, its timing, and what it asks for.

#How is CELPIP scored, and what score do I need?

Each section gets a CELPIP level from 0 to 12, there is no total and no pass mark, and from level 3 upward your CELPIP level equals your CLB level. So a Reading 8 is CLB 8.

Because there is no pass mark, "a good score" only means something against a target. The level your program asks for is your real pass mark, and it can be different in each skill. #What does CELPIP cost, and when do results arrive?

CELPIP-General sittings in Canada were listed at $299 CAD when we last checked, and results are posted to your account in 2 to 4 business days. Fees are set per sitting and per country, so the total on the checkout screen is the figure that counts.

#How do I register, and what happens on test day?

You register through your CELPIP account, pick a date, time, and test centre, and pay at booking. The seat is not held until payment goes through, so the booking is confirmed at the checkout screen.

On test day, arrive early: CELPIP asks you to be there 45 minutes before your start time, and check-in closes 15 minutes before the test begins. Bring the same original, valid, unexpired identification you registered with, because a photocopy or a mismatched name is refused with no refund. #Should I take CELPIP or IELTS?

Both are accepted for Canadian permanent residence, and for most people whose goal is Canada, CELPIP is the more comfortable fit. It is fully computer-based, records your Speaking privately with no examiner, uses only Canadian English, and maps one to one to CLB. IELTS is accepted worldwide and has a live Speaking interview, so it is the better choice mainly when you also need the score for study or migration outside Canada.

#How should I prepare for CELPIP?

Start by finding your weakest skill, because every program sets a minimum for each skill separately, so one low section decides your outcome. Then practise in the real format until that skill moves.
